Scandinavia is one of my favorite destinations, and I find myself returning frequently. The climate is mild (at least when it's not winter!) and the cities are easy to navigate and enjoy. We'll visit some of the world's best museums and explore two cities with different energies and cultures; both amazing and endearing in their own way.
Vibes: Copenhagen has a relaxed, clean, orderly and safe atmosphere. Almost everyone speaks amazing English. Work/life balance is a priority so afternoon coffee and cake (called fika) is common and shops close early (usually by 7pm). It might seem a little inconvenient to tourists but it also forces a slower way of travel which allows a more casual, enjoyable way of travel.
Attractions: Truly something for everyone - Tivoli amusement park (from 1843, an inspiration for Disneyland), castles and churches galore, museums for modern art and Danish design, Viking Ship Museum.
Outdoor: The best mode of transportation is a bicycle. Riding with the locals can be intimidating but we'll get a first hand introduction with a bicycle tour from a local. Based on the water with bright colored houses buildings along with renaissance-era designed buildings, it's delightful to just simply walk around and explore. South of the city there are white chalk cliffs, available for a day tour.
Food Scene: My favorite spot in the city is Reffen. It is a large collection of outdoor food stalls and the food has always been so good! Copenhagen takes fine dining seriously. It's home to NOMA, arguably one of the best fine dining restaurants in the world. There are also many other lovely restaurants with more affordable tasting menus. Denmark is known for their Smørrebrød (open faced sandwiches) and my personal favorite food item in Copenhagen, pastries.
Vibes: Stockholm is a bustling city with different vibes depending on which island you're visiting. English is widely spoken but it is still wise to have translate downloaded in case. Stockholm is safe but being a bigger city, you should keep your antenna up for potential scammers.
Attractions: Near central station is a bustling city center with a diverse population.
Gamla Stan is a lovely small island where Old Town resides. Easily walkable, charming cobblestone alleyways full of shops and old architecture. The other half of the island is a gorgeous church and a view of the city center across the water. A beautiful spot to watch the sunset.
Södermalm is largely residential but still has a lot to offer tourists in the way of museums, local shopping and parks/points of view, with a more casual pace than the city center.
Djurgården is the museum island. For me, I think of Stockholm as the city of museums. Everything from the recovered Vasa ship to Natural History to Abba, there's a museum for it. Also on this island is Gröna Lund - a waterside amusement park.
Outdoor: Stockholm is a juxtaposition between city and nature. The archipelago is easily accessible so water and boating is a common theme. An easy ferry ride can take you to a less populated archipelago island where you can hike and explore. Sauna is just a part of life. There are many to choose from; from a spa experience or renting a private sauna near the water and jumping into the bay to cool off.
